It’s an important charity to me, my paternal Grandmother died of cancer in 2001. She was the most amazing woman and it was heartbreaking to watch.

My maternal Grandmother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and is now undergoing treatment that would not have been possible without fundraisers like this raising money for breast cancer research. With your help we can make a difference.

For those who have never attended a run, the runners in pink shirts are breast cancer survivors, those in red are lead sponsor CIBC’s employees, and average Janes and Joes run in white. Most sport various accoutrements in pink hats, wigs, scarves, tutus, leg warmers, temporary tattoos anything and everything you can think of is somewhere represented. It’s the only day of the year I wear pink. Click for a few pictures from last year’s Run.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, and education awareness programs.

This year’s run takes place on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010, and I am less than halfway to my goal of raising $200, and I would really appreciate your support.

Thanks for your help.

On Wednesday my husband and I visited a shelter run by Toronto Animal Services to look at the kittens available for adoption.

The closest, the South Region centre, was difficult to reach due to blockades set up for the Indy races which were happening that weekend. After circling the centre for close to half an hour, we approached some service people who let us walk across the track, dodging giant beer trucks, trucks with construction and other dubious materials.

We eventually made it of course.

We’d checked online to see what was available, and to me this little kitten looked like the cutest thing ever, and in person she turned out to be even sweeter, climbing on my shoulder, nuzzling and licking my ear. How could I not fall in love?

Mouse hunt success

I decided to name her Lydia, as it’s a name I’ve always loved. It seems to suit her.

She was extremely sleepy when we took her home, and not very well the first night.

I took her to the vet on Thursday morning, and she was proscribed antibiotics, and she seems to have recovered well. She’s still under quarantine in my study at the moment, hopefully to be released later today, once I hear back from the vet.

Her colouring is similar to Bootsy’s, though I think Lydia has more white on her, and she’s a shorthair.

Neither Bootsy nor Merlyn are terribly thrilled about their new housemate, though as Lyd is still under quarantine, and has not been properly introduced this will likely change. She’s escaped a few times, and Bootsy’s hissed, while Merl has done his usual run-away-like-a-’fraidy-cat routine.

Cat and mouse

Lydia is sweet, but a little crazy, as kittens are. She hops around on everything, and views me as her personal climbing frame and chew toy. Apparently the toy mousie, bunny, hedgehog and screwed up bits of paper just don’t compare to the wonder that is me.

She’s been interfering with my ability to sit still for more than five minutes at a time and get much work done, but – somehow – I’ve managed, with another two stories almost ready to send out. I’ll have Drew give them a read-through then make a few more corrections and hopefully send them out by the end of the week.

Exciting stuff.

How do proper writers do this?

Last week my available working hours were reduced due to recovery time required by my surgery. However, I did send out a short story submission, and submitted three poems to another literary magazine.

Friday I felt most productive. Partially inspired by a dream,(1) I woke up early and wrote. I managed 1100 words before I even thought of coffee. I’m immensely and unreasonably proud of this.

I wrote a little more during coffee (another 400 words), and I’m continuing to work on it and shape it into something proper. So far, I like it.

For the pseudo long weekend myself, my husband and another friend made the trek up north to my parents’ cabin, Wild Wood, in the North Kawarthas Friday night. I thought I’d get more done there, but mostly we read, drank, and generally hung out in the heat. Bit of a swim in the lake.

I had a good time, and came away from it with plenty of mosquito bites, but I didn’t write a word while I was there.

Today’s my birthday. Celebrations won’t be as frivolous as last year, we’re on a smaller budget now, but it’s been a good day. I haven’t yet decided where we’ll be going for dinner, but I’m guessing it will be somewhere Italian.(2)

I’m proud that I’ve committed myself to doing something that I love, but I don’t feel like I’m getting enough done. I’m still learning what it means to be self-employed, still working on what it means to be a grownup, and making it up as I go along.

For the uninitiated, the runners in pink shirts are breast cancer survivors, those in red are lead sponsor CIBC’s employees, and average Janes and Joes run in white. Most sport various accoutrements in pink – hats, wigs, scarves, tutus, leg warmers, temporary tattoos – anything and everything you can think of is somewhere represented. It’s the only day of the year I wear any real pink.

I took a few shots as I was running, most of which are up on Facebook.

If you haven’t donated yet, but are able to spare even a few bucks, it would mean a lot to me. You can still donate as late as Hallowe’en, October 31st. All donations of at least twenty dollars are eligible for a tax receipt.

Knowing that even the paltry sum I’m able to raise helps fund research that can raise awareness for prevention and find a cure is important to me.

Please click here to donate to a great cause.

Thanks, and it would be great to see you running with me next year!

August 4th, 2009 was our eighth wedding anniversary.

This year we decided our gift to each other would be to finally frame the picture we bought while in Montreal for our fifth anniversary. It certainly seemed reasonable.

So, on Tuesday we went out for dinner at a local place we both enjoy.

It’s ten years ago this summer (July 8th, to be exact) that Drew and I met properly for the first time and eight years ago since we were married. It’s a long time, but it doesn’t feel like a long time ago.

A few years ago I asked Drew why he thought our relationship worked. His response: “Because I’m cool”. I told him that was funny, as I was going to say it was because I was awesome. He nodded and cheerily replied something to the effect of “That’s right, we’re both awesome”.

There’s a lesson in here: successful relationships work because each partner is individually awesome and cool. If one of the pair isn’t supremely nifty, it’s probably not going to last. (Love can only carry you so far.)

Cheers to all the awesome people out there.

Once upon a time my (great) uncle bought a hundred acres of woodland in the middle of nowhere. He built a (hunting) cabin and named it Wild Wood.

My uncle died, and my (great) aunt of course was extremely sad and she missed him.

I didn’t know my uncle well. While my aunt was friendly and sociable, I didn’t see him much. He preferred to keep to himself. The cabin reflects that: remote, strong, independent.

The cabin was a strong reminder, and four and a half years ago my parents bought the property from my aunt. The August long weekend was the first time I’d ever been up there. I’m very sorry it took me so long.

Trees don't look like this in the city

We drove up in Jo’s car on Friday night, my mother and brother followed late behind us, though it was well after midnight when we finally arrived.

It was so quiet, alone in the dark, late late at night. No cars. No music. No (other) people.

Until we heard a noise. A creature-sounding noise.

Afraid, we made martinis and a new slogan: Martinis – drink nature away!

(I’m still convinced I smelled a bear.)

I would say we had trouble sleeping, but it wasn’t quite that. We stayed up laughing and talking until the sun rose, and decided it might finally be time to lie quiet for a bit, lose consciousness and hallucinate wildly.

Upon waking we visited the nearby “town”, saw some fake Amish and cow-people getting ready for a hoedown. A hoedown. It – I – a…hoedown.

Rock near my future cabin

My parents would like each of us kids to have a place of our own up there, and while that’s not quite feasible yet, after finally visiting I think I’d like that quite a lot.

I’ve even picked out a spot.

Drew says it’s too small, but I’d just want something small to write in, and Drew’s already calling it “your writing cabin”. (One weekend is all it takes.) It will be lovely.

After some car trouble (RIP transmission in green truck), my father and (another) aunt came up Saturday afternoon.

He brought lots of dogs with him, two of his own and one belonging to my aunt, so by the end of the day there were seven people and three dogs sleeping in the cabin.

Nico rides

The next day Dad took me out for a ride on his ATV, which was a lot of (terrifying) fun, and then he let me have a go.

I’ve never driven anything with a motor that wasn’t in some sort of track (go-karts) or in some kind of cage (bumper cars). These things are big and rumble and they can go quite fast. (Much faster than my bicycle.)

I’ll admit to being a little afraid of the thing, though it was fun to go up and down the road a bit. I conqured my fear and have photographic evidence to prove it.

It also made me feel strangely grown up.

(Drew and my little brother also each had turns on the thing, but they’re used to driving fast, vroomy things, so they weren’t, perhaps, as impressed as I was.)

Jo had been on ATVs many times before, and wasn’t bothered about it. Jo thinks my dad’s the bees knees, and he’s said she’s not a citiot, unlike me. In fact, he saved an article about citiots just for me. To show me how lame and city I am. (Oh, Dad…)

Firehall sign

Alas, Drew had to work Monday, so we headed back home Sunday evening, and decided to stop for ice cream along the way. Jo, Drew and I kept our eyes peeled for ice cream signs, and we passed a few before seeing the giant ice cream cone.

We pulled in, got out, ordered our ice cream. Drew, as per usual, needed the bathroom, and headed into the main part of the store. His ice cream was melting, so I went to wait for him in there.

Then I looked up.

The crazy ceiling in the Firehall

The entire ceiling was covered in toys.

While we stood gaping in delighted amazement and amusement, the proprietor invited Jo to press buttons along the wall.

Things lit up.

Things made noise.

Things moved.

He then invited us to stay and watch the main show. It was some 15-20 minutes long, narrated (with sound effects!) by the wonderful man behind the counter.

The Firehall

At various points along the ceiling there are race cars, firemen, three roller coasters, an upside down city (complete with dogs), a crazy ring of planets (including Planet Firehall) and just toys everywhere.

A highlight was the flying cow and flying pig, which oinked and mooed in the proprietor’s voice.

It truely was awesome. And, as an added bonus, the ice creams were superb.

Such a crazy random place to stop, but I’m so glad we did, and I’m certain the next time we go to the cabin (and there will be many next times), we will stop at the Firehall.

It has become a Destination.

Huzzah to cabins, creatures, martinis, the Firehall, and my parents, and weird and wonderful people everywhere.

Miraculously, my sister called and said they’d come home a day early.

Apparently it did nothing in Ottawa but rain for a solid week. Ottawa’s boring in the sunshine, too, but it seemed to be the rain that killed it for them.

Jordan seemed very happy to see Jude again. (In fact, that might even be a smile on his face…!)

I, in turn, was happy to see Jordan take Jude away. I showed him the chunks missing from my bookcase, the split wood, the offending rabbit.

Rabbit poppet

They attempted to placate me with cheese(1) and bought me a little pink stuffed bunny to remember Jude by.

I’ve placed the toy bunny on the shelf the rabbit chewed.

I told them I’d stick pins in it.

They packed up the rabbit’s cage, and placed Jude in a cardboard box for travelling.

Bootsy and a box

Bootsy made a point of saying one last good-bye.

Though it could be that she just wanted inside the box. She has a thing for boxes, you see.

All in all, I’m certainly happier to watch the rabbit than I would have been to look after their dog.

Though I think the experiences of the past week have cured me of all desire to play host to pet rodents of my own. I once had pet rats (on purpose), but they were a lot of work. So are rabbits.

I’ll stick to cats. And my newt.

Really?

On day 1 I still getting used to the idea of Jude and rabbit-sitting, but already by day 2 I was trying to see what Jordan saw in her. (The rabbit, not my sister. Though that’s another topic entirely…)

I still don’t think I get it.

So I’ve compiled a list of the favourable attributes of a pet rabbit, and contrasted it with how much they suck.

Bunny, it ain’t lookin’ good fer you. (Have you considered not being a rabbit?)

Good Stuff About Rabbits

They’re cute.

They’re soft.

Easter is fun.

The last one’s not even technically about rabbits. It’s about paganism.

Now that we’ve exhausted their positive features, let’s get to the bulk of the pet-rabbit experience.

Rabbits: for good or evil?

Why Rabbits Suck

They can’t purr.

In fact, they can’t do anything cool.

They create an unbelievable stench.

They can’t be trusted outside a cage.(1)

Because they chew everything.

Like bookcases. They chew bookcases. Who does that?

This concludes our scientific survey of why rabbits make terrible pets.

In other news, my sister and her boyfriend are expected to return Sunday.

After yesterday’s Bad Day I wanted to leave Jude (aka The Stupid Rabbit) caged for the remainder of her time here, but Drew thought that wouldn’t be very nice.

Especially as she really, really wanted out.

I guess she’s used to it here now. Humph.

I allowed that Jude could come out – briefly! – if Drew watched her every twitch.

While Drew was keeping an eye on Jude, she was up to her (three day) old tricks again, hopping around behind the cage…where (some of) the bookcases are.

Drew observes the Grey

Dutifully, when this (inevitably) happened Drew did leap out of his chair and try to nudge her back in the other direction, but she just hopped back in her cage again. A short jaunt. Lock that door. Tough carrots, bunny.

No matter what I do, seconds after I sweep up after the rabbit, there’s shavings on the floor again.

I have the feeling I’m going to be finding shavings in my office for days after I get rid of this wretched creature.

Two days…!

I am assuming that they’re coming by on Saturday. What if…what if it’s not until Sunday…?

I’ve called this post “Jude Makes a Mess”, but could also be titled “The Day It Got Old”.

I’ve had a very long day at work and a long session at the gym (but a gay and carefree cycle home, bulldozing past cars, merrily disregarding traffic rules). All I wanted to do was shower, then write for a bit.

As soon as I opened the door to my office I hit The Dread Wall of Bunny Stink.

I clean Jude’s cage every day. I have no idea how she does it. But it’s gross and I wish she would stop.

Jude sucks

So, I clean the cage. Jude romps around and hides underneath the armchair. Cage is shiny and new (like Andrew).

Before I’ve even put the wire top back on the cage Jude has hopped in, freaked out for no apparent reason (the cats were both downstairs, and besides, they don’t scare her) and trashed her newly cleaned cage. Shavings everywhere.

Bad bunny.

So I clean everything up again while she gets in my way, then hides again under the chair. When she comes out I have to chase her around the cage before she’ll go in. Finally, shower-time.

I can’t wait to give this bunny back.

Three days and she’s gone…

Die bunny, die

Update

So, I foolishly let Jude out again to give her some exercise, keeping my eye on her.

For the past four days she’s been very dull, just hopping around between her cage and the bookcase, or simply sitting still at the back of her cage.

Not today.

Today she decides it’d be fun to chew my bookcase. Two big chunks missing. The wood is split. Not a good move.

It took a few minutes of throwing the bunny back in its cage, swearing and threatening to kill it before Drew reminded me that I’d agreed to watch the rabbit. I knew it might chew things. (But not this. Not my bookcases!)

Jude, kiddo, you’ve now confined yourself to the cage for the duration of your stay at Casa Mara-McKay. You may hop around in the bathtub while I clean your cage, but from now on, you’re not coming out. (Stupid jerk.)
