Update: This conference has been cancelled due to covid-19.
The Canadian Society of Medievals’ (CSM) 2020 annual meeting will take place during Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences 2020.
I will present my paper “Patient Women: Surgical Instruments in the Treatment of Medieval Women’s Diseases.”
My paper explores surgical technologies recommended for use in healing women in Guy de Chauliac’s 1363 treatise, Chirurgia Magna. De Chauliac’s influential text is composed of a sequence of treaties on different parts of the human body, including anatomy, which was unusual for surgical compendiums when it was first published. The book opens with a preface that explains his reason for writing Chirurgia Magna, primarily, to fill a gap in the existing literature by providing a comprehensive text dedicated to surgery.
The Canadian Society of Medievals’ Annual Meeting will take place from 1-3 June 2020 at Western University in London, Ontario.
